Moving Simulation Forward
Wet lab expansion!
Construction will begin in September to replace the current K6/120 space and will include the following:
- 11 tables with a middle divider (for a total of 5 work stations on one side and 6 on the other)
- Each station will have: suction; CO2; two work lights; stool and adjustable height table; 32” monitor with the potential to connect devices to them.
- There will be an instructor station on each side with an overhead camera that can be used for demonstrations, as well as cameras in the room with the potential to record.
Clinical Simulation Program Operations Director

Operations Director
Clinical Simulation Program
In December 2019, the Clinical Simulation Program was fortunate to hire Shannon DiMarco as their Operations Director. Shannon has an extensive background in simulation program operations and medical education research. She most recently served as the manager of operations of the simulation center at Children’s Minnesota. Prior to that, she worked as a simulation laboratory manager in the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire with a degree in communications and is currently completing her master of science in health care simulation at the University of Alabama–Birmingham.
Innovation in Simulation

Director of Simulation Training
Department of Surgery
We now have an opportunity to expand our collaborations and develop innovative simulation curricula to meet the needs of all learners in the Department of Surgery. In addition to departmental spaces that may lend themselves to simulation, the Clinical Simulation Program is now a common use resource. Those running simulations there need to apply to use the space, but, other than purchasing any supplies needed as part of the simulation, there is not an extra cost to use the Clinical Simulation Program space and resources. In addition, they have educators on staff who are experts in education and simulation and can help with simulation curriculum development.
If you have questions about developing simulated training, utilizing the Clinical Simulation Program, or joining the departmental Simulation Champions Group, please contact Dr. Paul DiMusto, Department of Surgery Director of Simulation Training, at dimusto@surgery.wisc.edu.
Piloting New National Curriculum
The Division of Vascular Surgery purchased a new simulator for endovascular procedures. The Interventional Cardiology program also contributed to the purchase. The Angiomentor allows simulation of a range of endovascular procedures and automatically measures and scores metrics for each procedure. An individualized curriculum has been developed for each level of trainee. The simulator also allows the Division of Vascular Surgery to participate as one of 12 pilot sites for the Fundamentals of Vascular Surgery program. This program consists of 8 endovascular and 3 open surgical tasks and will eventually become a requirement for completion of training and board certification in vascular surgery.
