Continuing Medical Education in the Department of Surgery is making great strides and having tons of success. With the addition of new and innovative course such as WISC 2.0 Women in Surgery (which has been postponed until 2021) and our Biennial Obesity Summit, the department continue to grow in educational efforts. We have continued to host our flagship courses, such as Current Topics in General Surgery (October 2020) and the 16th Biennial Phonosurgery Symposium (July 2021), that have brought hundreds of presenters and participants from all over the globe to campus to provide education and partnership to us all.
Although, the world around us is changing, CME is continuing to plan with modifications that will allow us to be flexible as we continue to provide educational services. Our tele-med programs such as the Pediatric Emergency Care Project ECHO (monthly) has taught us plenty about educating from a distance and has prepared us to really move forward with confidence in our content and our planning.

“As the manager of our CME programs, I’d like to thank all of our faculty, marketing and communications, and IT departments, who are working through this processes. We only strive due to the support of you all and the department.”
-Veronica Watson, CME Program Manager

Grand Rounds and General Surgery M&M – Weekly CME Opportunities
As a reminder to department practitioners, researchers, and educators– our weekly Grand Rounds and General Surgery M&M are learning opportunities that offer CME:
These CME activities are directly sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Interprofessional Continuing Education Partnership (ICEP).
Accreditation Statement
In support of improving patient care, the University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
General Surgery M&M – Wednesdays from 6:30-7:20 am | HSLC 1335 | July-June
General Surgery M&M Overview

The Department of Surgery M&M (Morbidity and Mortality) Conference is a weekly conference that features complications submitted and presented by residents involved in those cases. Cases are submitted to a secure database each week and are reviewed and selected for presentation by the faculty moderator. Residents focus their presentations on what happened to cause the complication and what could be done to prevent the complication for future cases (increase medical knowledge, improve systems-based issues, improve team communication) and cite scholarly works to further back up their presentations.
Goals
Participants will gain experience in new areas of practice, incorporate new knowledge into practice, improve patient outcomes by identifying and reducing incidence of discussed complications, and promote interprofessional teamwork and collaboration in the department by identifying areas of care that would benefit from this.
Objectives
As a result of participation in this educational series, participants will:
- Improve case-based medical knowledge applicable to surgical patient care, such as an abnormal anatomy or common and novel complications
- Analyze systems failures or breakdowns in communication that may have led to an error or complication
- Contribute to the institutional quality improvement effort to reduce complications and preventable adverse events in surgical care improve surgery outcomes
- Apply increased knowledge and skills to improve collaborative, interprofessional care and outcomes of surgical patients

Department Grand Rounds – Wednesdays from 7:20-8:20am | HSLC 1335 | Sep-June
Grand Rounds Overview

The Department of Surgery Grand Rounds features presentations relating to best practices in surgery, teamwork, and groundbreaking clinical research. Grand Rounds features a variety of surgical specialties, in order to best represent the population of clinicians and learners within the department and to broaden surgical knowledge outside of one’s direct specialty. We invite presenters from campus and across the world to provide meaningful learning experiences to members of our department.
Goals
This activity is designed for UW Department of Surgery faculty, residents and other healthcare providers as well as all surgeons and clinicians in Wisconsin and across the country interested in clinical effectiveness and efficacy as it relates to patient care and disease processes. As defined by the American College of Surgeons, surgeons are expected to study and evaluate new procedures and to become competent and proficient with advances that are appropriate. Technical skill alone is not sufficient to qualify a surgeon to perform new procedures. Procedural skills must be acquired within the context of in-depth knowledge about the natural course of a disease.
Objectives
While each presentation will target objectives unique to the presentation, we aim to identify speakers that have made significant strides in their respective fields and invite those who will help us obtain the following global objectives for our department attendees:
- Increase knowledge of new developments in surgical research and practice, within and outside of the domains pertaining to the participant’s surgical specialty.
- Improve ability to incorporate new knowledge into patient-centered surgery practice.
- Increase ability to effectively communicate across different specialties and professions when providing care to patients undergoing surgery.
