The University of Wisconsin has a strong tradition of vascular surgery training, with a fellowship since 1999 and an integrated residency since 2009. The goal of our integrated residency is to train the future leaders in vascular surgery. The current practice of vascular surgery demands broad training including inpatient and outpatient care, open and endovascular operative techniques, and formal training in vascular laboratory testing and interpretation. Our 0-5 program provides considerable breadth of training in vascular surgery to meet these training demands. We also provide an opportunity for academic development, with a dedicated additional two years following the PGY2 clinical year of the residency, for a total of 7 years of training.
Given the robust clinical volume at UW, we are able to maintain both the integrated residency program and the fellowship program. Our faculty members believe we offer the vascular trainee one of the premier integrated vascular residency positions in the country. Our strengths are multiple, including but not limited to the diversity of faculty and training backgrounds, the volume of open complex vascular cases, and our capacity as a regional referral center for carotid stenting, aortic dissection, throacoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair, complex EVAR and TEVAR, and limb salvage programs. Perhaps our greatest strength lies in the inherent comradery that exists between our vascular trainees and faculty as well as the general surgery residents and faculty within the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin.
The Department of Surgery at UW has a strong focus on education. Our UW Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency has the full support of the department leadership including Division Chair Dr. John Rectenwald, as well as Dr. Ann P. O’Rourke, who serves as the General Surgery Residency Program Director, the Vice Chair for Education, Dr. Brigitte Smith, and our Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Rebecca Minter. We look forward to hearing from you.
