ABOUT DR. M. KEITH AND BARBARA WEIKEL
Dr. M. Keith Weikel is the Retired Senior Executive Vice President/ Chief Operating Officer and director emeritus of HCR Manor Care, Inc., a leading provider of health care facilities with growing capabilities in subacute and specialty medical services, transitional care and rehabilitative services. The company operates more than 500 long-term care centers, assisted living facilities, outpatient rehabilitation clinics and home health care offices. Barbara Weikel, a retired nurse, began her career in the newborn unit at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, and later moved to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison. Barbara and Keith spent the first four years of their marriage in Madison, with Barbara serving in the aforementioned positions while Keith he was earning his master’s degree in Pharmacy and his PhD in Marketing at UW-Madison.
A native of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, Dr. Weikel joined HCR when it was a subsidiary of Owens-Illinois in 1986 as an executive vice president of HCR and general manager of its Midwest Division. He served as senior executive vice president and director of operations from 1988 to 1991 when named to his final position. Weikel became the director of the company in 1992. He spent his entire career in the health care field. Before joining HCR, he was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Manor Health Care Corporation, the long term care unit of Manor Care, Inc. from 1984 to 1986. From 1978 to 1984, Weikel was a group vice president of American Medical International, Inc. From 1970 to 1977, he served in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as commissioner of Medical Service Administration. Prior to that, he served as a brand manager and manager of Health Economics for 5 years with Roche Laboratories.
The Weikels, who split their time between homes in Sea Island, Georgia, and Toledo, Ohio, have been actively involved with and supportive of UW-Madison. Their gifts have created the M. Keith Weikel Leadership Speaker Series and the M. Keith Weikel Distinguished Chair in Leadership within the Wisconsin School of Business, and the Barbara D. Weikel Clinical Practice Laboratory within the UW-Madison School of Nursing building, Signe Skott Cooper Hall.
