Wisconsin Department of Surgery recently ranked 8th among all universities in National Institutes of Health research funding.
The annual rankings come from the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. With $14.2 million in funding, Wisconsin Surgery rises from its 2020 ranking of 11th to crack the top ten at number 8 in the country.
“Especially during such a challenging time, this recognition really demonstrates the commitment everyone in the department has maintained to our research program through thick and thin,” said Rebecca Minter, MD, A.R. Curreri Distinguished Chair of the Department of Surgery. “While this ranking is just one measure of our research success, it is a significant one, and I am so proud of our research teams.”
The Blue Ridge Institute has published rankings since 2006, with lists encompassing over 25 departments such as surgery, orthopedics, and more. Other University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health departments with rankings in the top 10 include Pediatrics and Urology, both ranked 7th among all universities.
Wisconsin Surgery has placed within the top 25 since 2006, attracting over $150 million in total NIH research funds over that time. Funding is obtained through the cooperative work of hundreds of Wisconsin Surgery personnel, including both researchers such as scientists, faculty, residents, post-doctoral trainees, and students, and research contributors such as writers and editors, research administrators, grant managers, and more.
