John Russell, PhD
Associate Scientist
John A. Russell, PhD, is an Associate Scientist for the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Russell received his BS and MS in Kinesiology from Kansas State University. After serving as a Researcher in the Department of Surgery, Dr. Russell obtained his PhD degree from Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Wisconsin-Madison. His expertise is in the areas of muscle physiology and movement science in the cranial sensorimotor system, and the manner in which adaptation within this system can be measured and optimized. In particular, examining muscle contractile and blood flow properties in muscles of the tongue and larynx and how these properties change with aging, disease, treatments for disease, and disorders. His current research is focusing on muscle pathology in a rat head and neck radiation, and how exercise or muscle stimulation programs modeled after those in current clinical use may modify muscle physiology and function.
