Visiting medical student electives/externships for senior medical students interested in General Surgery generally occur between July and November of the senior year. These rotations last four weeks and are competitively approved and arranged directly by General Surgery Faculty. We are still waiting for the final elective dates for 2025-2026 Match Season from our medical school, but below are the likely rotation dates:
7/7-8/1/2025
8/4-8/29/2025
9/2-9/26/2025
9/29-10/24/2025
10/27-11/21/2025
You may now apply for a rotation for the 2025-2026 Match Season using the process described below. Applications received before March 31st will be given priority. Interested students should submit the following items to UMESurgEd@surgery.wisc.edu as their application materials:
- Letter of Interest
- Current CV
Medical students who are underrepresented in surgery and interested in pursuing a career in General Surgery are encouraged to apply for the Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Visiting Elective Scholarship. Applications received before May 1st are given priority.
Following committee review and approval, the applicant will need to visit the Medical Student Electives website and follow the process to apply through VSLO (usually opens late April/early May). Upon completion of these criteria you will be allowed to formally apply and be approved to visit the School of Medicine and Public Health and Department of Surgery. Until this process is completed, the elective as approved first by the Department cannot be confirmed and “official.”
We look forward to meeting and working with you!
